Gymkana
Blue Salon

A modern hair studio in the heart of Dubuque, IA. By appointment · Walk-ins welcome

The Studio

Hair that holds the room — quietly, confidently, well past midnight.

Gymkana Blue is a sleek, modern hair studio tucked into the corner of Dubuque where the light turns blue and the chairs are empty only between appointments. We work by reservation so the music stays at the right volume and the conversation never gets rushed.

Every service — from a clean, architectural cut to a four-hour hand-painted balayage — is delivered by a single stylist who owns your hair from consultation to blowout. You will not be passed between stations.

We choose products that respect the integrity of your hair, the chemistry of the dyes, and the time it takes to do the work properly. That is the whole of our philosophy, written quietly into every appointment.

Cuts & Styling

Architectural shapes, soft layers, blunt bobs, lived-in shags. We cut for how your hair actually behaves on a Tuesday morning, not just how it photographs under our lights.

From consultation to blowout
02

Color & Balayage

Hand-painted dimension, lived-in blondes, rich brunettes, vivid fashion shades. Each formula is mixed to your strand, never pulled from a pre-batched tray.

Custom-toned · Olaplex-bonded
03

Blowouts

The kind of blowout that earns a second look across a room. Round-brushed volume, glassy ends, movement that holds through dinner and into the next morning.

Wash, blow-dry, finish

Treatments

Bond-building repair, deep conditioning masks, gloss refreshes and scalp rituals for hair that has had a hard year. Honest recommendations, no upsell.

Repair · Hydrate · Restore

Signature

Balayage that looks like poured glass.

Our color work is hand-painted section by section on a head that is not quite like anyone else's, in a shade we mix in the bowl right behind your chair. There is no menu of "levels" here — we read the way the light hits your hair in our mirror and build from there.

The result is depth at the root, brightness at the ends, and a transition so natural that your colorist can guess where you had it done only because the ends still feel soft six months later.

The Space

A studio built for quiet evenings and good decisions.

Gymkana Blue is a small, deliberately sized studio. Three chairs, a long black counter, a wall of bottles we actually use. The lighting is warm at the station and cool at the basin. The music is the kind you do not notice until it changes.

We chose this scale on purpose: it means we know your hair when you walk in, we remember the formula we used last time, and we are never juggling three guests at once.

One stylist per guest, start to finish.

Clean air

Low-ammonia formulas, full ventilation.

FAQ

Good questions, answered.

If yours isn't here, just ask at your appointment — we'd rather you ask than wonder.

Do I need to know what I want before I arrive?

No. Most of our first-time guests arrive with a vague direction — a feeling, a Pinterest board, a haircut they liked three years ago — and we translate that into a plan together during the consultation. That fifteen-minute conversation is built into every appointment.

How long does a balayage take from start to finish?

Hand-painted balayage typically runs 2.5 to 4 hours depending on length, density and whether we are lifting from a darker starting point. We will quote an honest time estimate when you book so you can plan your day around it.

What if my hair has been colored somewhere else?

Bring what you know — even a rough description of the brand or the level. We will do a strand test if there is any uncertainty about how your hair will lift, and we will tell you plainly if your goal needs to happen in two visits instead of one.

Do you take walk-ins?

When the chair is open, yes. By reservation is the surest way to get the time you want, especially evenings and Saturdays, but you are always welcome to call and ask about same-day availability.

What products do you use?

We carry professional lines selected for performance and ingredient quality, including bond-building treatments during color services. We will never apply a product to your hair we would not use on our own.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours notice when possible. We hold a credit card to secure longer appointments like balayage and will only charge for cancellations inside that window. Life happens — talk to us and we will almost always work something out.
